June was a fairly busy month for me, albeit not entirely due to plans. I did make it to The Hollywood Show in Burbank and I had a fantastic time. My flight route was Atlanta-Denver-Burbank, and I wrote a little bit on the Atlanta-Denver leg, but by the time I got on the plane in Denver I was already getting tired and I ended up not writing on that leg, nor on my return route which was an exact reverse. I also ended up not writing at the show.
About a week or so after I got back — just long enough to be sure that I hadn’t brought it back from California — I came down with a cold. As colds go, it was mild, but due to pre-existing issues with my lungs, I don’t tolerate respiratory infections very well. I was down for a good week and am still feeling lingering effects.
I also finally got back on my correct medication regimen shortly after returning from Burbank, and that sometimes affects my creativity for a few weeks while it settles out. As of this writing, I find I’m still in it.
That said, I wasn’t completely unproductive this month. Final word count was 14,924, and it included (but wasn’t necessarily limited to):
- Believing in Dreams (Firefly), an update of an older fic.
- Déjà Vu (Terra Nova), an update to a piece that I’d forgotten I’d even written until I came across it on the Wayback Machine.
- Synchronicity (Drive, rated M), another fic I’d forgotten about writing. When I found this one via the Wayback Machine, I remembered that I’ve actually written most or all of a second chapter, with plans for three more. Unfortunately, that draft and my notes have been lost, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to complete it. It stands on its own, though, so I went ahead and posted it.
- Touching the Wall, a new response to an older Scarecrow and Mrs. King prompt. I ended up writing this in about an hour and a half. I left it overnight so that I could come back with fresh eyes in the morning, but to my surprise I didn’t end up doing anything more than correcting spelling and grammar.
- A True Name (Earth 2), the last of the 100 Situations prompts I wrote before pulling them all down (although I never had published this one). From here on out, Tales from Winter Camp will be all new material.
- Washing Our Feet in the Tide (Scarecrow and Mrs. King, rated M), which I began in May. I’m not completely happy with it, but at this point I’ve gotten as far as I believe I’m going to.
Looking at that list, I can see that I honestly didn’t do as poorly as I thought during June. Upon reflection, I suspect that my feelings of “not getting anything done” are related to the fact that there are two items I didn’t work on: All That Mattered and The Perfect Daughter.
I’ve already promised myself that I will be working solely on the latter during Wafflemoot, which runs from July 17-20. I imagine I will be able to knock out a good deal of it then. As for All That Mattered, I need to buckle down and get onto it. So that, I think, will be my other primary focus for July.
